Chemical Burns

Chemicals may irritate, burn or penetrate the skin, causing widespread and sometimes fatal damage

Can be caused by

  • Domestic cleaning products
  • Acids
  • Deodorant
  • Bleach
  • Disinfectant
  • Fuel
  • Paint thinner

Treatment for Chemical Burns

  • Ensure the scene is safe and appropriate PPE worn
  • Check the patient’s airway and breathing
  • Have a colleague check the chemical & advice
  • Safe comfortable position
  • Flush area with clean water – 20 minutes
  • If appropriate remove contact lenses
  • If irrigating eye, keep injured eye lowermost
  • Patient may need emergency shower
