Chemical Burns
Chemicals may irritate, burn or penetrate the skin, causing widespread and sometimes fatal damage
Can be caused by
- Domestic cleaning products
- Acids
- Deodorant
- Bleach
- Disinfectant
- Fuel
- Paint thinner
Treatment for Chemical Burns
- Ensure the scene is safe and appropriate PPE worn
- Check the patient’s airway and breathing
- Have a colleague check the chemical & advice
- Safe comfortable position
- Flush area with clean water – 20 minutes
- If appropriate remove contact lenses
- If irrigating eye, keep injured eye lowermost
- Patient may need emergency shower
