National Tree Week is the designated week for tree protection awareness in Ireland, organised by the Tree Council of Ireland and Coillte. In 2023, it will be held from the 19th of March to the 26th.
Here we provide some ways you can join in the fun and plant trees!
Plant trees directly in the ground…
Planting and caring for trees directly in the ground is an incredibly rewarding experience. Find out if there are any tree-planting events happening near you, or start planning your own by purchasing saplings to plant in your garden or neighborhood! Trees planted directly into the ground can help absorb carbon dioxide emissions, provide habitat for wild animals, and keep local soil healthy.
Create sustainable farming practices…
Planting trees robustly and sustainably is one of the best ways to promote tree growth and celebrate National Tree Week. Sustainable farming practices can help improve soil quality and boost biodiversity, making your garden a healthier place for everyone. By alternating what type of trees and crops you grow each year, you reduce potential crop failure, conserve soil fertility, increase pollinator-friendly habitats, as well as providing food for local wildlife.
Support reforestation projects around the world…
Reforestation projects are an important part of National Tree Week. Planting trees requires the validation and regulation of a country’s existing forests or those doing reforestation efforts.
Take part in tree care activities and workshops…
You can take part in special tree care activities and workshops in your local area to learn tips and tricks when planting, see first-hand how to maintain existing trees and practice pruning techniques. Practicing proper Care of trees not only builds community connections but also prepares everyone for future reforestation efforts.
